Happy Birthday Douglas DC-3

70th Anniversary of the First Flight of the Douglas DC-3

Mercer Air Lines Douglas DC-3, N16096 under taxi at Hollywood Burbank Airport (known today as Bob Hope international) on December 16, 1975, the day before the 40th Anniversary of the DC-3s first flight. The aircraft is minus the small roundel that was placed the following morning above the registration number, which carried the Douglas logo representing "First Around The World."

On that day, the aircraft was 36 years old. If the aircraft has survived somewhere in the World, it's age today would be four years short of today's Anniversary, or 66 years old, with only four years remaining before its 70th Anniversary. Thus, the search is on...

...a nice restoration project I should think! <g>

Update: 12/21/2005

Editor Mark S. "Bear" Daniels exchanged e-ail with the Friends of the DC-3, United Kingdom, and learned the following:

"Dear Mark,

The reg should be n 16096 c/n2136. this a/c was derelict at San Juan for many years, later scrapped. It also flew with mercer which was not in your list. Hope this helps.

John/Maureen Woods."
