Scandanavian Airlines System Boeing MD-87

Written Off: October 8, 2001

The Lage Viking

A look back in the archives finds that a Jet Airliner in our Collection has met Long Ago with a terrible fate...

by Mark S. "Bear" Daniels
Publisher, ILIPS Group

The sad thing about Aviation Photography is that sometimes, just for a moment, you find yourself looking through an old collection of photos, researching the registration number of an aircraft you find there, only to learn that the aircraft and even more sadly, it's passengers, crew, have met with a terrible fate.

At ILIPS Group, during the processing of the scans necessary for our 2006 - 2007 expansion, that an MD-87, photographed at Long Beach, California, while awaiting the first flight of the Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, met a tragic and unfortunate fate as the result of a ground collision in fog, with a Cessna Citation, on October 8, 2001, with the devastating loss of 110 passengers and crew, at Milano-Linate Airport (LIN), ten years after its first flight, which it is possible, we were photographing this day. In that regard, the taxi past and takeoff roll. We still have other images to look through to determine if we also caught the landing, which is distinctly possible. If we did, you will find them added and connected to this story later.

The accident details are contained at the Flight Safety Foundation's "Aviation Safety Network at:

http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20011008-0&lang=en

We will not be repeating the details here under any circumstances. The story has been told enough and long before we learned we had the images in our possession. The aircraft is depicted here in its old color scheme and is provided Fair Use for any and all publications, historians or individuals, wishing to utilize the photograph of rpublishing, historical or collection purposes. If you wish to credit this publication, please credit:

www.ilips.net

...or you may simply credit the photo to your personal or your publication's "Collection." It is our policy not to profit off tragedies that befall others. We are merely here to disseminate information, historical records and news. Compensation is therefore not required, and if any is presented to us, it will be denied and returned immediately. We ask that you respect our wishes in this particular area:

"Death be not profitable!"

- Decree of a Wise and Just African King

There are four historical notes:

1) On this day this aircraft flew, the first flight of the C-17A Globemaster III prototype occurred. Those with knowledge of the first flight date of this aircraft can determine by contrasting the date of its first flight to the first flight of the C-17, whether or not this MD-87 twinjet was indeed departing on its first flight.

2) This aircraft was operating from the Flight Test Ramp at the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, Douglas Aircraft Company facility, Long Beach, California, and was in "Flight Test." Flight Tests usually meant the aircraft was prepared for flight, flight certification and delivery, with FAA Certification and delivery often taking place within the first three flights of a test vehicle.

3) The third historical note is as perhaps, ironic as it is tragic. On the day this aircraft was photographed, a Cessna 210 with three people onboard, a mother, her son and daughter, all three doctors, attempted to take off from Long beach Airport (Dougherty Field) and crashed just off the field near the Runway's end. This occurred after takeoff from an intersecting runway utilized by General Aviation at the field. All three people onboard perished in front of thousands on hand to watch the first flight of the C-17.

4) The McDonnell Douglas Corporaton has since been taken over by Boeing, with the facilities South of Lakewood Boulevard demolished, except for the Flight Test ramp, which was still operational with the last Boeing 717s, a follow on to the MD-87. The production line was still open the last time I visited in 2005, however, the last Boeing 717 has been produced, and production of all DC-9 / MD-80 / B717 aircraft has now ceased. The grounds that once housed DC-10 and MD-11 production, along with Douglas Aircraft headquarters, were still being plowed for condominiums.

Memorabilia
50th Anniversary of Powered Flight...

...With a Twist!

Notice anything different about this stamp? The Stamp is from the 50th Anniversary of Powered Flight, which means, December 17, 1953!

Look at the cancellation -- "November 16, 2006!"

There are still plenty of these stamps unused in collections around the World, and some Stamp vendors will mail you collector's stamps in an envelope with postage paid in "old stamps!"

Remember, an unused stamp in the United States NEVER loses it's value until after cancellation, in regards to use. As for Collecting, they can be quite valuable so look at those envelopes...that cancelled stamp might already be worth more than it's value, cancelled or otherwise!

Longest range jets with lie-flat seats augment Delta’s strategic international expansion

ATLANTA, Oct. 24, 2006 – Delta Air Lines will boost its ability to go the distance, internationally, as the first U.S. carrier to take delivery of Boeing’s 777-200LR aircraft. By adding the world’s longest range commercial jetliner to its fleet, Delta will bolster its international expansion with the ability to connect virtually any two cities around the globe, nonstop. The 777-200LR is the fifth and newest model of the 777 family to enter passenger service. Delta will take delivery of two 777-200LR aircraft in 2008.

“These aircraft will enable us to fly non-stop to ultra long distance destinations across Asia and the Middle East as we continue our international expansion,” said Mel Fauscett, managing director of Fleet Planning & Acquisition for Delta. “The range of these aircraft coupled with innovative cabin features will allow customers to travel to popular international destinations in superior comfort and distinguish Delta’s customer experience among the U.S. carriers.”

Delta plans to take delivery of these aircraft in early 2008. The two planes will come equipped with fully horizontal personal sleeper suites in BusinessElite®. Delta’s fully-horizontal personal suite will feature:

A reclining seat that adjusts to multiple comfortable positions, including a completely flat surface offering travelers a 6-foot 3-inch bed;

A privacy screen incorporating pull out meal table, fold-out video monitor, integrated footrest and personal stowage compartment for bags, shoes or blankets; and

Immediate access to the aisle so customers don’t have to disturb another passenger when exiting their seat

Beginning in fall 2008, Delta will add a sleeper seat to the rest of its 777 fleet. In addition to lie-flat seating, customers choosing to fly Delta’s award-winning BusinessElite on international flights will enjoy enhancements like industry-leading digital entertainment on demand at every seat introduced this summer as part of Delta’s commitment to improving customers’ travel experience.

Customers flying in economy class on Delta’s newly reconfigured 767-400 and 777-200 aircraft will catch a glimpse of the future of Delta’s on-board entertainment with award-winning, on-demand entertainment at every seat as featured in the BusinessElite cabin and select long-haul domestic flights in the United States. On all Delta international flights, customers in economy class will enjoy Delta’s new all-leather seats, enhanced food offerings, a complimentary cocktail with each meal, and soon a complimentary amenity kit featuring eye shades and ear plugs for more personal comfort and privacy.
